At 21 years old, the self taught singer-songwriter Nic Leaf sets the stage with a new wave of dark-alt pop music. He started writing songs at the young age of 14, learning how to mix and produce songs in his Calgary bedroom. However, Nic didn’t start releasing music until 2018, when his debut Single “N.W.D.T.A” hit stores, which was well received. With his new found confidence, Nic started writing more while exploring the alt-pop genre, taking inspiration from his personal stories and turning them into songs. As Nic began expanding his knowledge of song writing, he released “Want It All” which was also well received. This gave Nic the conformation that he was doing something right. Following his 2018 releases, Nic released his song “tired” in 2019, which tells a metaphorical story of Nic’s state of mind at the time, using strategies to intentionally make the listener anxious, using off-time harmonies, and eerie instrumentation. During the 2020 Pandemic, Nic continued to evolve his writing, and production skills, creating many projects that he would build from as time moved forward. One of these songs that developed past the pandemic was his track “Falling” released in 2021. This self empowerment song tells a story from someone else’s perspective of seeing someone dealing with suicidal tendencies, encouraging them that life is worth living. Following the release of “Falling,” Nic released his song “I Want You To Be Happy.” This song was intended to be the direct prequel to “Falling,” as this song tells the story of someone who is struggling with themselves, and is looking for help. In the same year, Nic also released an acoustic version of “tired” which gave a new feel to the song, making it softer, but keeping the edgy/dark tone of the original. Currently Nic is working on his debut album, which currently has no determined release date. His most recent songs “Run” and “Addicted” are due to appear on the artists upcoming album. Nic is excited for the future of his music, and can’t wait to debut his future LP to the world.
