About
Freya Milliken is an award winning alt-folk singer-songwriter based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, known for her rich voice, introspective songwriting, and deeply personal storytelling.
Freya Milliken is an award-winning alt-folk artist based in Halifax, NS, known for her rich voice, introspective songwriting and deeply personal storytelling. Her debut EP Wholeheartedly explores queer love and identity, setting the foundation for a growing catalogue shaped by honesty and craft. The title track won Song of the Year at the 2023 Music New Brunswick Awards, and the EP was nominated for Folk/Roots Recording of the Year at the 2024 Music Nova Scotia Awards. Her latest single “Where I Stand”, produced by Mark Adam, balances vulnerability with momentum, moving into a sound that feels more immediate and unguarded. Described as “a fresh new voice in folk music” (Jan Vanderhorst, Just Us Folk), Nova Scotian singer-songwriter Freya Milliken has been making large strides in her career through emerging artist programs at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Folk Canada and Honey Jam, plus commissions for Symphony Nova Scotia and United Way Halifax. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Acadia University (2023), is the recipient of several Music Nova Scotia grants and has performed at Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, Deep Roots, HUFF, Nova Scotia Music Week, and on a European tour with the Acadia University Singers. Her music has been featured on radio stations across Canada including CBC, CKUA, Q104, CHMA, CKDU, CIOE and CKAR. Beyond her performing career, Freya is a passionate music educator and community builder, inspiring students of all ages and interests. “Freya Milliken's craft is what shines every time she steps on stage, from finely-woven lyrics, detailed guitar, and thoughtful arrangements. Yet the warmth radiates through, as Freya opens her heart with a sensitive and responsive worldview. ” — Terra Spencer “Freya Milliken is a timeless songwriter. Her respect for Canadian songwriting icons -- Joni Mitchell, Stan Rogers, Matt Andersen and more -- and their influence on her music is palpable. Paired with an impressive vocal range and a knack for writing earworms, it's hard to resist her charm on and off stage. She is a bright young light with a mature soul, who has stepped up to carry the tradition of storytelling and communion that can only be found in live music. ” — Sarah Jane Scouten “Freya Milliken is a captivating performer whose authenticity and musicianship shine through every note. Her performances at the Deep Roots Music Festival have been heartfelt highlights - connecting with audiences through her songwriting, warmth, and genuine stage presence. Freya’s guitar work is extraordinary, and I’m always curious to hear what new tunings she’s exploring. Much like Canadian icon Joni Mitchell, Freya is fearless, grounded and stellar all at once.” — Dave Carmichael - Artistic Director, Deep Roots Music Festival
